Hey Adam,

Yes, there are fees for a business license, but mine city business license was only $50.00. And I also got a DBA (do business as) for $100. You do not NEED this stuff when starting out. Do a few gigs first, and put some of your profits back into the company

Hey Denise! Tip jar depends on the event, you simply ask the host before booking the party, and have a suitable alternative for gratuity if the host says no to a tip jar.

You MUST work for yourself. You can charge $30-50 an hour PLUS tips! NEVER, EVER, EVER work for a catering company...unless it is to get your feet wet and get comfortable with how the business works...but don't do it long term!!!

Hi James,

I just read your blog; great ideas for tips. I'm going to try decorating the tip jar. I'm bartending a Halloween party with another bartender I know through our staffing agency. Can you recommend any ideas for a theme costume for 2? Any advice would be apprecited, thanks.

Hello, the halloween tips were good. I have a question for you. I recently signed up with a catering company . I wanted to get some experience on that side of the business. My question is, is it normal practice for the bartender not to have a tip jar? Does it depend on the function itself? I did my first event and I was a little disappointed. I worked what would have been a normal neigborhood bar shift-- but i did 10X more work. At the end of the day I only made $96.00 that is what the caterer paid @ 12hr. If I would have been able to collect tips it would have been at least a $300.00 night easily. I quess if the no tips is the case.. I will change my mind set as use this opportunity to gain experience and networking. Any advise would be appreciated. Thanks

I couldn't agree more on this topic The "80-20" Rule. Thats why when I bartend i always keep a smile, cause no matter how bad the night is you knever know when that one customer is going to make your night and if he/her comes to you and your rub them the wrong way... well let's just say your night is gonna end the same way. On the other hand even if it's last call for alcohol and you make that last effort to serve that customer as if they were the first! Then you just might get lucky, cause you put in your extra 20% and they tipped you an extra 80%.
Good looking out for our fellow bartenders there is alot of good business out there and alot of money to be made that's why we should stick together and respect all bartenders united!

You only need a liquor permit or any type of liquor license if you plan on SELLING or PROVIDING the liquor, beer or wine.

What I teach (and practice myself) is just providing the service of Bartending. So, I help my clients with a shopping list, and then THEY purchase the liquor so it is just sitting their for me ready to go when I arrive.

Once you get started and making some good cash, I recommend getting a Business License of some sort, but other than that, you are good to go, no liquor license required!

Keep the questions coming guys!

Cheers,
